Thunderbirds are Go!

THUNDERBIRDS ARE   GO!

 

In 2002 various class 47 locos were selected for conversion to class 57s to act as Thunderbirds after the television programme of the same name. “Thunderbirds” was a puppet show it’s theme being international rescue. The work being undertaken by Brush, this included replacing the power unit with a more powerful engine and altering the electrics and coupling arrangements to accept the new Pendolinos which were coming on line with Virgin Trains. This allowed the electric powered Pendolinos to continue their journey from London beyond Crewe in the absence of overhead power lines along the North Wales Coast to Holyhead. These were numbered 57301 SCOTT TRACY (ex 47845) through to 57316 FAB I (ex 47290). My first shot of these locos was 57308 TIN TIN at Crewe 5th March 04 before the new coupling was fitted, and on the 12th December 08 my shot of 57304 GORDON TRACY at Llanfairpwll marked the last regular weekly Pendolino drag to Holyhead. Other locos were also converted for Great Western and Freightliner these pictures cover only Virgin locos.
